This is a post I never wanted to write.  I don't even like thinking about it.  But as hard as I try to avoid it, reality has a way of reaching out, grabbing me by the shoulders, and shaking me like a rag doll! Consider me well shaken! The Intercollegiate Studies Institute did a study that measured national civic literacy. Guess what they found!? People are stupid.  And not just a few of them . . . election winning percentages of them!  But it gets worse!  The elected are often even more ignorant than the voters who elected them.  For example, did you know that the electoral college was established to supervise presidential debates?  Oh God, I hope not!  If you do, you're in the company of 20% of elected officials who took this exam . . . AND YOU'RE WRONG! (I need to go lie down!)  Here's a little more.

US elected officials scored abysmally on a test measuring their civic knowledge, with an average grade of just 44 percent, the group that organized the exam said Thursday.

Ordinary citizens did not fare much better, scoring just 49 percent correct on the 33 exam questions compiled by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI).

"It is disturbing enough that the general public failed ISI's civic literacy test, but when you consider the even more dismal scores of elected officials, you have to be concerned," said Josiah Bunting, chairman of the National Civic Literacy Board at ISI.

Disturbing doesn't cover it!

"How can political leaders make informed decisions if they don't understand the American experience?" he added.

Now there's a head scratcher.  I think my response to that would be... They can't!  Raise your hand if  you're worried!

Here's a headline that caught my eye.

Wow, there's a shocker!  But even more surprising was the next sentence.

Because of escalating piracy, Africa’s high seas are fast becoming dominated by foreign navies, raising questions about African countries’ ability to secure their own waters.

Who's raising questions?  Why would anyone raise questions?  Does anyone seriously think that East African countries can secure the waters off their shores?  Take for example Kenya.  Kenya's Navy consists of three inner tubes,  two bath tubs, and an old chest freezer.

.  .  .  Ok, I exaggerate, but only slightly.  Here's a legitimate inventory of Kenya's Navy.

  • Training vessel KNS Nyati was donated by the Royal Navy in 1964. It was formerly known HMS Aberford. [3] It was sold for scrapping in 1971.
  • Patrol crafts KNS Simba, KNS Nyati and KNS Chui were delivered from Britain in 1966. These ships were built by Vosper Thornycroft. KNS Simba was decommissioned in 1997. [4]
  • Madaraka Class missile boats KNS Harambee, KNS Jamhuri KNS Madaraka and KNS Mamba were delivered in 1976 and built by Brooke Marine. [5] KNS Jamhuri and KNS Harambee were decommissioned in 2002. [6]
  • Nyayo Class warships KNS Nyayo, KNS Shujaa, KNS Shupavu and KNS Umoja were delivered in 1986. [3]
  • Galana Class landing ships KNS Tana and KNS Galana were delivered in December 1993 from Spain. [2]

WHAT KIND OF CONTROL DO YOU THINK THEY CAN MAINTAIN OVER THEIR COASTAL WATERS?!  . . . Forgive me,  dumb questions have a tendency to make me crazy.  The World is being victimized by these Islamo fascist heathens, and the World needs to respond.  Africa can focus on feeding her hungry, healing her sick,  housing her homeless, and halting the genocide on the continent that persists to this very hour.   The rest of the civilized world ought to be filling the waters off the coast of Africa with an obscene number of ships.  .  . Send battle ships,  destroyers, aircraft carriers.  Send anything capable of firing projectiles that go BOOM and either eliminate the pirates, or convince them get out of the pirating business.  I realize this is a difficult task, but having World commerce held hostage is a big, no it's a HUGE problem that needs to be solved yesterday!

Sarah Palin is an equal opportunity threat.  Old guard politicians of both the left and the right find her intimidating.  She's been called ignorant, stupid, greedy, unrefined, opportunistic, clearly not ready of national office, and did I mention stupid!?  Sarah is not of the elite ruling class, which is pretty much just fine as, according to our Founding Fathers, there wasn't supposed to be an "elite ruling class". (memo: watch 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington', read the writings of Ben, George, John, & James... rinse and repeat).   Sarah Palin is one of us.  We need a LOT more of "US" in Washington.  So support and encourage Sarah Palin and those like her.  We can take this country back... yes, we can!

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20, 2008 –

Military Family Appreciation Week begins tomorrow, and Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, issued a message today noting the observance. Here is the text of the chairman’s message:

“This month, as we celebrate our blessings, and give thanks for our freedom to enjoy them, we take great pride in honoring November 21-28, 2008 as Military Family Appreciation Week.

“Families serve just as their uniformed service members do. And the military family has rarely faced as many challenges as our families do today. After seven years of war, hundreds of thousands of families have served through multiple deployments in support of operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, as well as many other locations throughout the globe.

“But the love and support of our military families do more than allow us to serve abroad. Our families serve at the very center of American society. They are the bedrock of a free republic which provides for a common defense – and their commitment to the values of hard work, self-sacrifice, and moral virtue is a source of great pride and inspiration for us all.

Thank you from a grateful nation!

"Well Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?"  was a question asked of Benjamin Franklin as he left the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.  “A republic, if you can keep it." was his reply.  As I was doing my morning reading I came upon a piece that reminded me of this historical event.   I think it merits our attention.  Ben, George, John and James (the spinning Founders referred to in the title of this entry) gave us a republic for a reason.  A republic is:

A form of government in which power is explicitly vested in the people, who in turn exercise their power through elected representatives. Today, the terms republic and democracy are virtually interchangeable, but historically the two differed. Democracy implied direct rule by the people, all of whom were equal, whereas republic implied a system of government in which the will of the people was mediated by representatives, who might be wiser and better educated than the average person. In the early American republic, for example, the requirement that voters own property and the establishment of institutions such as the Electoral College were intended to cushion the government from the direct expression of the popular will.

The U.S. Navy said today that it's not about to use its military might to free a giant oil tanker or other ship captured by Somali pirates because if naval forces recover one ship, they would have to recover them all.

Besides, a Pentagon official asked, what would they do with all the captured pirates?

Are they serious?  Can't figure out what to do with the captured pirates?  (They're kidding, aren't they?)  How about this:

But seriously, who said anything about capturing the pirates?  If we don't figure out how to clean up this mess now these thugs will soon control the entire country of Somalia and they'll spread their brand of Islam all over the African continent .  .  .  You did know that Africa's a continent, didn't you?  Pay now, or pay later  and later the price will be much higher.  Why are we willing to be held hostage by these barbarians?
